- Firefly is a smaller-growing select cultivar of the Hamelia patens species. It produces similar nectar-filled, tubular red, orange, and yellow flowers in slightly different color tones, and green, ovate leaves with red new growth.
- Firefly Firebush matures into a dense, rounded shrub ranging from 3 to 6 feet tall, and is equally as attractive to hummingbirds, butterflies, and birds as its larger parent. Use it as a background, hedge, or screen plantings in mass, or as a stand-alone accent, or outdoor potted plant.
- Care: When mature, plant in fertile, well-draining soil or potting media in a full sun area. Water as needed to maintain consistent soil moisture, but avoid overwatering. Overly saturated plants will become spotted, weak, thin, and fail to flower as expected. Feed a good quality, slow-release, bloom-boosting fertilizer with the initial planting and annually in spring thereafter. Prune after flowering to control size and shape. Avoid pruning in winter when plants are dormant.
- Indoor Growing: This semi-tropical plant grows large, requires the full spectrum of light 4 to 6 hours daily, high humidity, and warm temperatures with at least 10*F day/night differential, so not well suited for the average indoor growing space.
- Climate: Hamelia patens is a semi-tropical plant recommended for growing in Zones 8B, 9, 10, and 11. Protection from cold temperatures is required in all Zones for the longest life, best appearance, and earliest flowering. Note that Zone recommendations are based on average temperatures and does not consider other variables. Mature plants in 8B and 9A typically go fully dormant and resprout in Spring.
